Welcome to St. Bartholomew's Church

Welcome to the new website for St. Bartholomew's. We are still in the process of building this so bear with us and watch out for new content. Here you will find information about our worship and our activities, as well as our place within the wider community.

St. Bartholomew's is a Grade 2* listed parish church in the Church of England, based in Sydenham, London. There are about 200 people in the congregation, from diverse backgrounds, and our worship combines all the main traditions of the Anglican Church.

We welcome all Christians and those enquiring into Christianity, and communicant members of other churches are invited to take Communion with us.

We have services every day (except Mondays) and two Eucharists on Sunday at 8am and 10am.

We seek to:

  • be an inclusive, family-friendly place for the community
  • be somewhere people can be in touch with the spiritual
  • offer worship to God
  • find new purpose in life

We offer:

  • a place of prayer where all can feel at home
  • a place of shelter where the lost can know themselves found
  • a place of pilgrimage where we learn and grow on our journey together
  • a place of support for and challenge to the community

Father Stephen's Ordination

Father Stephen will, God willing, be ordained priest by the Bishop of southwark on Saturday 2 July, in Holy Trinity, Eltham. In the Church of England, one is ordained deacon first, then after the satisfactory completion of the first year, comes a second ordination, as priest. In the deacon's year, the newly ordained person becomes family with parish life and clergy duties, but is not yet able to preside at the Eucharist, declare God's forgiveness of sins, or give a blessing. After ordination as priest, thee three functions are added. It is customary for a new priest to celebrate the Eucharist for the first time in a special way, often on a weekday so that other clergy colleagues may attend. So Fr Stephen will celebrate his "First Mass", as this is called, on Monday 4 July at 7.30pm.
